It’s been dry. As I look out over nature, I can sense the thirst for water. The lawn is turning brown. The garden requires intervention. The freshly planted fields are parched. The average person requires about 2 liters of water a day. When you are physically thirsty, you reach for something to satisfy your thirst. Water, Gatorade, Celsius energy drink, soda…
You know me – I like to look at the Spiritual lessons I can learn from the natural world.
So, I got to thinking – what do I spiritually thirst for? What should I thirst for? What does the Word have to say about this topic? I did a quick search on “thirst” and the Holy Spirit led me to great treasure.
Matthew 5:6 is the first Scripture that came to mind when I thought about thirst. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, For they shall be filled. The first thing we should thirst for is righteousness or right-ness. And when we thirst for this, God promises we will be filled. Awesome!
Next up is Psalm 42:1-2, specifically verse 2 – My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. The second thing we should thirst for is God (the One True God – Jehovah). Psalm 63:1 says the same thing.
In several places God promises to provide water for those who thirst. Jesus said it in John 7:37-38 (all you have to do is come to Him). He says in John 4:13-14 the water He gives completely satisfies. Isaiah 44:3 says God will pour water on, not only those who are thirsty, but on the dry land. Then He compares that promise to the promise of the Holy Spirit being poured out (wahooo!).
Finally we see in Revelation that, in eternity, we will never thirst (Revelation 7:16-17) and we will get to drink from the water of life (Revelation 21:6).
Join me in praying for a good, soaking rain for the plants and animals. And the next time you are thirsty, let that thirst remind you of the Spiritual things you should be thirsting for. Come to the Living Water and get filled!
