leaving your mark

By Pastor Dave

“I want to make my mark in this world. I want people to be changed for good because of me.”

Have you ever had a thought like this? Most people have. We all have a need to be significant and to leave a mark in this life. What will your mark be? I had a conversation with someone and we discussed a previous job they had. It was over 14 years ago and yet just a week or so ago some of his former employees still remember him and have all kinds of positive and caring comments towards this man. Why was that? This man is a Christian, a true follower of Jesus. He saw his employment as a mission field and he let his light shine in his workplace. He lived Mathew 5:14-16 at work. He was not pushy, he was not holier-than-thou, he was who he was and he loved the people he worked with. He was not ashamed to be known as a Jesus follower.

He did his work as if he was doing it for Jesus. He did not allow others to draw him into the wrong thinking and wrong attitudes. He treated everyone with respect and showed a concern for others. He was not chasing a pay check or a title. He did his job to the best of his ability. Yes, he had enemies because of his stance as a Christian. Yes, some people ridiculed him and lied about him. But he trusted every day to his Lord and Savior. Because of that he made a positive impact in the lives of many, many people who, 14 years later, still talk about him with a smile and positive, grateful thoughts.

You too can have such an impact. It starts with your relationship with God. You must be willing to put God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit first in your life. You must take Him to work with you. You must be a good and productive employee. Be on time, do your job, help others succeed. Honor your bosses, whether they are honorable or not. Do all things as if unto the Lord and not as unto men. Be a diligent, trustful, positive employee. Be willing to pray for others, to listen to others, to bless others. Ask God to show you how to be the “light of the world” and to “let your light shine so that others praise God because of you”. Do this and you, too, will leave a positive mark where ever you are, at work, among friends, anywhere you are.
