Do what I tell you to do

By Pastor Dave

John 21:18-22 (NASB) Truly, truly I tell you, when you were younger, you used to put on your belt and walk wherever you wanted; but when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands and someone else will put your belt on you, and bring you where you do not want to go.” Now He said this, indicating by what kind of death he would glorify God. And when He had said this, He said to him, “Follow Me!” Peter turned around and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them—the one who also had leaned back on His chest at the supper and said, “Lord, who is the one who is betraying You?” So Peter, upon seeing him, said to Jesus, “Lord, and what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If I want him to remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow Me!”

This is short but powerful. Sometimes when God is dealing with us about things, be it sin, a direction He wants us to take, forgiving someone, adjusting our attitude, loving the unlovely, or a difficult walk He has for us to walk through, we are tempted to look at someone else and say, “God what about them?” We want to take our eyes off what God is telling us. We think others have it easier or better than we do. We want the uncomfortable feeling we feel to be transferred to others.

I love what God says about this. He says, “that is none of your business what I do with them, you do what I told you to do and follow Me. Never mind about them.” So, I will tell you, get your eyes off others and follow Jesus and do what He told you to do. Get your eyes off others and you obey Him.
